Engaging the University: Classroom Technology for Flexible Instruction [Lighting Round 2]
Description
Sacramento State embarked on the largest classroom update in its history with the opportunity to use HEERF funding to enable flexible, hybrid instruction during the pandemic. Sacramento State partnered with Procurement, Facilities, Information Technology, the colleges and our A/V vendor to update 486 classrooms and student focused instructional spaces in five months to ensure Fall 2021 instruction readiness. We'll share our planning, engagement process, equipment selection and installation coordination plan as well as the impact to the college community.

Outcomes
  • The importance of university and vendor partners and engagement
  • How to make an impact economically
  • Results providing faculty with the ability to teach in the flexible manner they choose

The Student Perspective on A/V Design for HyFlex [Lighting Round 2]
Description
The recent transition to offering hybrid flexible (HyFlex) course opportunities required quick action on technology purchasing and installation. Ideally, other stakeholder perspectives will be considered, regarding what technology to use and how it will be used. I will share data and perspectives from ongoing HyFlex courses about the technological needs and desires of students and instructors. Students indicate particular preferences about the visual material they are provided in virtual synchronous class experiences. Importantly, those preferences can be addressed in many classrooms with relatively minor changes in technological infrastructure. Sharing these perspectives should inform future decisions on purchasing and classroom renovation.

Outcomes
The goals of this presentation are to help the audience:
  • Understand what content online learners want to see on their screen during synchronous HyFlex class meetings
  • Learn about an inexpensive hardware and software configuration that suits this student preference, and
  • Reflect on possible discipline-specific A/V preferences for optimal HyFlex delivery
