See no eval: A constructive evaluation system for online, hybrid, and technology-enhanced teaching [General Session 1]
Description
One positive outcome of the ongoing pandemic for higher education is innovation. Faculty have experimented with new technologies, modes of instruction, communication strategies, and assessments. But how do faculty demonstrate their innovations in traditional systems of evaluation that don't account for online, hybrid, and technology-enhanced teaching? UCSC Online Education has developed a set of evaluation instruments and protocols to help faculty demonstrate their teaching excellence to promotion-and-tenure committees that also focuses evaluators on best practices and provides an opportunity for reflection and self-evaluation to faculty.

Outcomes
  • A set of issues to consider when designing an evaluation system
  • Possible strategies for implementation
  • Access to an adaptable set of evaluation instruments

Beatitudes of Digital Equity [General Session 1]
Description
The global pandemic highlighted the disparities in the campus populations of many universities and we now have an opportunity to improve the learning environment for all members of campus. Much like universal design, design for digital equity and inclusion benefits everyone by broadening students' experiences through collaborative knowledge sharing and exposure to diverse thought. We design for digital equity and inclusion by ensuring that all students’ lived experiences are included, respected and reflected in their learning environments and all students can fully participate in the classroom of the future. We will showcase several Beatitudes (based on Dr. Frank Harris) that reflect approaches to equity mindedness and how to practically use technology to incorporate these into a course.

Outcomes
  • Facilitators will share strategies for centering online learning and education technology in justice, equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the need to embed Advocacy, Belonging and Cultural Humility in their daily practice as it applies to digital bridging and education technology.

Four Unique Qualtrics Projects That will Make You Re-Think Your Existing Tools [General Session 1]
Description
What do you do when the platforms & systems at your institution don't align with the needs of stakeholders or curriculum? Due to UCSF' larger health setting & the blending of experiences between courses in an integrated curriculum, the School of Medicine faces unique challenges addressing learner & faculty needs. Most schools use an LMS as the foundational organizer. In contrast, UCSF combines the campus LMS with other platforms to organize the curriculum; we must explore other platforms or innovate existing platforms to find solutions. Come along on our journey as the Technology Enhanced Education group shares how we leveraged a common feedback survey tool, Qualtrics, in unconventional ways: to deliver learning content, track student progress and manage assessment. We found Qualtrics to be a robust and flexible tool that worked well for all projects. We hope to inspire you to think creatively when barriers arise and consider technology hacks to address your challenges.

Outcomes
  • Identify four novel ways Qualtrics can help you and your learners (besides feedback surveys!)
  • Describe advanced Qualtrics features that you could use in your own projects
  • Think creatively about how existing tools can be used in unique ways

Using Blended Learning to Build Skills for Providers Supporting Clients with Self-Disclosure of a Health Condition [General Session 2]
Description
Healthcare providers face complex challenges as they support clients with self-disclosure, informing contacts about exposure to an infection such as COVID-19. We developed a self-paced online course and a live-online course that complement each other in preparing providers to support self-disclosure. The self-paced course uses visualization to tap into learners’ prior experience and introduces the four-step model of disclosure. Learners then attend a live-online course led by instructors experienced working in the field. Their knowledge is built on with role plays and skills practice with peer and instructor feedback. This course was piloted in August and received positive feedback in usefulness to participants’ work. This course models how blended learning can support skill building.

Outcomes
  • Describe a model of how an asynchronous online course and live virtual training can complement each other for skill building
  • Outline the process of storyboarding and course design for skill building in asynchronous and live online courses
  • Gain insight into the four-step model for supporting self-disclosure of a health condition
You can view the Storyline portion of the course here: https://360.articulate.com/review/content/63075931-8e59-42b9-aaa9-8b568dfe1f0a/review

Rethinking Faculty Support Models: Specialized support and innovative tools for post-pandemic instructional delivery [General Session 3]
Description
With the disruption of standard classroom teaching models due to the pandemic, we realized the return to in-person teaching will never be the same. In preparation for the big return, UCR invested in a new faculty support model and technology packages that elevates remote participation. Instructional Continuity Consultants were recruited from every academic department to support instructional delivery for in-person as well as remote courses. General assignment classrooms were upgraded with technology that will help increase student engagement and enhance learning, provide faculty with new tools that facilitate pedagogical exploration, and effectively expand UCR's campus blueprint digitally to accommodate a growing student population.

Outcomes
  • Explore flexible support model for instructional delivery
  • Assess UCR’s process for technology selection and adoption
  • Determine viable solutions for in-person and remote course delivery tools.

Enhancing the Large Class Zoom Experience [General Session 3]
Description
In the fall of 2020, three faculty co-teaching a cross-disciplinary winter quarter class of more than 250 students sent out a plea for help: they felt that the experience of teaching their very interactive, lecture/discussion/small group work class wouldn't be well-served by the usual Zoom experience. We stepped up, and built out a system that preserved small group capability in a large class and gave faculty a more dynamic space to teach from. In this talk, we'll discuss defining the faculty's need in a way that could be addressed by a technological solution, bending the available technology to our needs, creating the practices that organized the class, solving the tech problems, then streamlining it all for future use.

Outcomes
1. Understand the importance of addressing emotional human factors
2. Appreciate the power of the mix-minus technique
3. Become aware of the opportunities to simplify complex systems with OSC

Post-Pandemic Professional Development: Opportunity and Affordance, with a Bit of Apprehension [General Session 4]
Description
Professional development in an age of technological change amidst a global pandemic is daunting. Nevertheless, technologists must prepare ourselves for moving targets of demands and expectations. Academic curricular recommendations responded by shifting from specification of knowledge areas to competencies. To allow these recommendations to be applicable over time, these competencies are appropriately not tied to specific software or hardware technologies. We can also leverage this approach for professional development. One technique is through use of non-academic information sources, known as grey literature.

We discuss determining the veracity, and perhaps longevity, of academic and grey literature, and approaches to professional development.

Outcomes
  • Recognize the difference between academic literature and grey literature
  • Understand levels of trustworthiness of information
  • Develop criteria for the  professional development source they use.

Managing Up: Fostering a Culture of Teaching and Learning At the Campus Level [General Session 4]
Description
Instructional designers and education staff at UCSF are formalizing an intercampus community of practice for teaching and learning innovations. This enables them to bring visibility to what they do, clarify reporting structures, inform leadership and establish themselves in decision-making processes.

In this session, they will review what they've learned over the past year and share examples of activities that will continue regardless of the stay-at-home order. Hear their plan to improve faculty development by offering centralized workshop opportunities through school partnerships and proactively disseminating teaching strategies and resources that work both online and in person. They’ll also share some great tips for adapting existing education technologies in this hyflex environment.

Outcomes
  • “Manage up” and shine a spotlight on instructional design at the campus level, including formalizing a community of practice into a chartered committee with the power to inform leadership decisions.
  • Scale-up and create proactive workshop timelines and improve strategies for disseminating resources and fostering innovation throughout the organization.
  • Look at a tool you already have in a new way (we’ll share several examples including using Qualtrics to allow multiple assessors to evaluate students in multiple cases; using the Book feature in Moodle to manage the flow of case study, and a new way to utilize PollEverywhere in a hyflex class).

Unconventional Proctoring Solutions [General Session 4]
Description
At the onset of the campus shutdown in response to COVID-19, the UCR community was tasked with converting over 3,000 courses to remote instruction for the duration of the pandemic. In addition to restructuring how courses would be delivered, a means for administering and proctoring exams needed to be devised — no easy feat, with many classes upwards of 300 students. This resulted in “do it yourself" remote proctoring solutions with zero cost to students and no collection of student data by outside vendors. Faculty can choose the strategy or combination of strategies that makes sense for their course. Although no proctoring solution can completely eliminate academic misconduct, the solutions offered will protect academic integrity in high-stakes assessments and minimize student disruptions.

Outcomes
  • Compare and contrast three solutions for exam proctoring using existing staff
  • Understand technology options and limitations
  • Determine viable solutions for remote course proctoring
